Cuomo Says Coronavirus “Initiatives Are Not Based On Science But Are Based Out Of Fear” in Conference Call With Jewish Leadership

In a leaked conference call that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had with Jewish leaders last Tuesday, he said that the government’s coronavirus initiatives are “not based on science but were based out of fear.”

“This is not a highly nuanced, sophisticated response- this is a fear-driven response”

“People- see the numbers going up- close everything- close everything- it’s not the best way to do it but it is a fear-driven response”- Cuomo said while speaking to Rabbinical leadership over the conference all.

The conference call was about the recent lockdowns based on COVID positive upticks in certain Jewish communities in Brooklyn and Queens

An orthodox Jewish social media figure, The Meturgeman, pointed to an article from Hamodia, which contained this interesting phone conversation.

Hamodia reported that they exclusively obtained a full recording of a conference call New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had with Jewish leaders last Tuesday(October 6th), in which he said he would limit houses of worship to 50% occupancy in areas seeing a COVID-19 uptick, just hours before a public press conference in which he limited it to 10 attendees.

Hamodia evidently overlooked the most revealing part of the recording and focused on the discrepancy over the shul restrictions,  however- this very candid conversation with Cuomo is quite an eye-opener.

The recent new lockdowns in these Jewish zip-codes (and other non-Jewish areas) are not based on science, according to the governor.  This begs the question: Were all of the lockdowns in New York, initially based on fear from the start?  The even bigger question, are these lock-downs the proper way to deal with a pandemic, period?
