Federal Appeals Panel Temporarily Rules in Trump’s Favor on Tax Returns

President Donald Trump will not have to turn over his tax returns to a New York prosecutor quite yet, Axios reports.

A federal appeals panel Tuesday temporarily blocked a lower court ruling that would have forced Trump to comply with a subpoena from Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance that requested eight years of the president’s financial records.

The panel scheduled oral arguments for Trump’s appeal for Sept. 25.

According to Axios, Trump’s attorneys plan to appeal all the way up to the Supreme Court if they lose the hearing.

The legal battle for Trump’s tax returns started last September. Vance’s office suggested it is investigating Trump and his company for “alleged bank and insurance fraud” in court filings made last month.

So far, Trump has not been victorious in court when it comes to keeping his tax returns private. The Supreme Court ruled in July that presidents are not immune from investigation and Vance has the legal right to subpoena Trump’s financial institutions. Despite their ruling, they punted the case back down to lower courts so Trump’s legal team could raise other objections.

Last month, a federal judge dismissed Trump’s lawsuit, which led Trump’s lawyers to appeal. A three-judge panel from the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals heard brief arguments Monday before issuing its temporary stay.

Even if Vance wins, Axios reports it is unlikely the president’s tax returns will be made public before the November election due to grand jury secrecy laws.
