The bronze statue of Theodore Roosevelt, on horseback and flanked by a Native American man and an African man, which has presided over the entrance to the American Museum of Natural History in New York since 1940, is coming down, The NY Times reported

Roosevelt took office as vice president in March 1901 and assumed the presidency at age 42 after McKinley was assassinated the following September. He remains the youngest person to become President of the United States. Roosevelt was a leader of the progressive movement, and he championed his “Square Deal” domestic policies, promising the average citizen fairness, breaking of trusts, regulation of railroads, and pure food and drugs. He made conservation a top priority and established many new national parks, forests, and monuments intended to preserve the nation’s natural resources. In foreign policy, he focused on Central America where he began construction of the Panama Canal, Wikipedia summarized.
His face is depicted on Mount Rushmore alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.
Most statues of historical figures have been targeted since the original inception of the Marxist tinged BLM movement. What originally started as a movement to remove statues of Confederate figures has evolved into a total frontal assault on American history.
“Over the last few weeks, our museum community has been profoundly moved by the ever-widening movement for racial justice that has emerged after the killing of George Floyd,” the museum’s president, Ellen V. Futter, said in an interview. “We have watched as the attention of the world and the country has increasingly turned to statues as powerful and hurtful symbols of systemic racism.”
Amazingly the NY Times reported “In many of those cases, the calls for removal were made by protesters who say the images are too offensive to stand as monuments to American history.”, essentially declaring that mobs can now decide what historical works of art are fit for removal. The paper of record also pointed out in the case of Teddy Roosevelt it was determined by the museum as opposed to a mob of vandals.
Mayor de Blasio commented: “The American Museum of Natural History has asked to remove the Theodore Roosevelt statue because it explicitly depicts Black and Indigenous people as subjugated and racially inferior. “The City supports the Museum’s request. It is the right decision and the right time to remove this problematic statue.”
Critics of Roosevelt site that he at the time supported several eugenics-based programs similar to Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood.
Teddy Roosevelt like current president Trump was born in NYC, making them the only two presidents born in the big apple. Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, north of Albany.
Roosevelt survived an assignation attempt on October 14, 1912 in Wisconsin. He made a full speech on his campaign stop, with the bullet in his body!
