Mayor de Blasio appeared on Good Morning America Friday morning and immediately went on the attack.
De Blasio’s tone seems to always be more frantic and urgent as opposed to Governor Cuomo, who people across the party line have been praising, WOR radio host Marc Simone and others have pointed out.
“When the president says the state of New York doesn’t need 30,000 ventilators, with all due respect to him, he’s not looking at the facts of this astronomical growth of this crisis”, Politicio reported on his appearance on the morning show.
De Blasio said the city has received 2,500 ventilators in the last week or so, but it will need 15,000 in short order. He has also called for three million N-95 masks, 50 million surgical masks and 25 million sets of gowns, gloves and other protective equipment.
“I can tell you right now we have enough supplies to get through this week and next week in our hospitals — that’s all I can guarantee,” de Blasio said.
Politicio reported: As Trump pushes for businesses to reopen on Easter, de Blasio warned that timeline is providing people with “a false hope.” “This is going to get worse before it gets better,” he said.
It is important to note that President Trump refined his position and stated that he wanted to open up areas in the nation least effected by Covid-19.
“This is what we envision: Our expanded testing capacities will quickly enable us to publish criteria, developed in close coordination with the Nation’s public health officials and scientists, to help classify counties with respect to continued risks posed by the virus,” Trump said in the letter. “This will incorporate robust surveillance testing, which allows us to monitor the spread of the virus throughout the country. Under these data-driven criteria, we will suggest guidelines categorizing counties as high-risk, medium-risk, or low-risk.”
Coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said that the plan was to work county by county to track the virus and prevent its spread, a strategy that would allow for life and business to return more to normal in some areas.”This is what we’re talking about: how to do surveillance, how to do contact tracing, and how to do each of these items to make sure that you prevent that spread,” Birx said in the last minutes of a White House press briefing, Washington Examiner explained.
De Blasio also stated on GMA: “We think this crisis is going to grow through April and into May,” the mayor told George Stephanopolous. When asked if New York City Schools could be closed through May, the mayor responded, “I think we have to be ready for that.” The mayor went on to say that they believe that more than half of the people in the city will at some point get infected with COVID-19, “It grows before it comes down.”
